March 13-14, 2013
- Teaching & Learning with the iPad workshop for educators was held in Wilmington, NC. Students and instructors from the school helped to training 85 educators from across the region on the use of the iPads in the classroom. The student showcase was especially a big hit!
Course guide for the coming school year was designed as a web app to be installed on the student iPads. This is used for registration for classes for the coming school year.
- Revised our parent student agreement to reflect additional costs to students if screens are cracked or the iPad is damaged. This will better cover our repair costs from the $25 fee originally collected.

- Students and teachers present at FETC2013 on the use of the iPads in teaching and learning. A great Success!
November 29, 2012
- The first several iPad mini devices were secured for trials. We will expand this to include a number of students to get additional feedback about the difference in use of the smaller iPad.
November 16-17, 2012
- The first Tech Summit was a big success! Two days of sessions to help educators from 8 states and Canada. Total attendance for the two days was 120 (sold out). Feedback provided will be used in the design of future summits. about 20 students participated in the event - displaying their use of a variety of apps in the classroom. This was one of the best parts of the meeting! Thanks to our guest speakers from around the country - your insight into technology is invaluable.
October 15, 2012
- After the first nine weeks with all students in the high school with the iPad we have met our goal of total deployment of the device. All teachers and students have the iPad for both use at school and home.
All devices have been in the student hands for the first quarter. A couple of casualties with the iPads being dropped, but not bad for having the numbered deployed across the school. Teachers are using these well in the classroom. Continual professional development really pays off. Students new to the iPad are adjusting well and overall comments are quite positive.
- Absolute Management Software used the previous year to manage and deploy apps to the student devices was attempted to be renewed. Customer service was so bad when attempting to take care of this we discontinued this product. We requested Maas360 be used and within 24 hours they had us up and running! Now that is a company that knows how to keep a customer!
- First iPad Conference Training! After many inquiries, the FA staff presented a series of sessions to groups and individuals from other schools and states on the use of the iPad in the classroom. Plans were made for the next installment of this program for later in the Fall.

- Additional iPads are purchased to cover all high school students. This will bring the total to close to 500 student devices, 120 teacher devices, and clas sets of 30 and 10 or the Middle School.

- iPads have been issued to the 10th grade class. This will give them an opportunity to learn the platform well before the beginning of the next school year.
April 12, 2012
- North Carolina Department of Public Education pilots the field tests for the next generation of testing on the iPads with our Algebra I students. This information should be valuable to the individuals in testing at the state level as they prepare for electronic testing across the state.

- iPads have been formatted and enrolled into our MDM management system. Allocation process has begun to transfer the 12th graders to iPad 2 and update and reissue iPad 1 to 10th grade.

- Additional iPads are purchased to issue to all students in grades 10-12.
October 7, 2011
- Technology Mini-Conference held at the Franklin Academy. All staf from our school as well as staff from other area schools joined our staff trainers to learn about the applications important to instruction and student use in the classroom.
July 20, 2011
- A parent informational meeting was held for our 11th and 12th grade families. Basic guidelines and areas of use were reviewed. Parents began submitting the AUP and Agreement forms to the staff. iPads were distributed to the students over the next several days.
July 11, 2011
- A series of teacher trainings have begun during our work week with the staff. We focused on application of the iPad to every-day tasks and procedures in the classroom. All of the teachers received their iPad2.
May 4, 2011
- The iPads have arrived and we have begun the task of cataloging each device. All teachers have been given an iPad and attended a 3 hour introductory teacher training. Additional training has been planned for times during the remainder of the school year as well as during the required work week before school starts for the new academic year.
March 21, 2011
- Final decisions were made regarding expansion of our project. 180 more iPads will be ordered to outfit our entire 11th and 12th grade students with iPads for the 2011-2012 school year. Teacher training has begun. Teachers will be given iPad V2 this summer which will allow them to connect the device into a projector with no issues.
February 22, 2011
- The next set of students attended a meeting with their parents to sign off on taking the iPads home with them each night. We were able to pace them through the introductory time period faster as we learned much from the initial group of student users.
December 16, 2010
- Students in the designated additional classes are introduced to the iPad and its use in this and other classes. A preliminary timeline has been given to the students for use of the devices in their class and eventually all of their classes.
December 1, 2010
- Additional classes of AP European History and AP English IV will be integrated into the iPad pilot program. An additional 20 iPads will be brought into the classroom and transitioned into the student's hands.
November 18, 2010
With the Thanksgiving Break around the corner, students will be given the options to sign out the iPad to take home to facilitate their reading of a supplementary novel while out of school. Students and parents will receive a student handbook and sign the iPad Use Agreement Form.
November 11, 2010
- Our first parent/student meeting was held to review the iPad and the creative ways the students are using these in the classroom. Mr. Luddy stopped in for a few words and was able to witness the student presentations on the applications they find most useful in their classes.
October 15, 2010
- Students are given instructions on how to check out the iPad at the beginning of the school day to use in their morning classes. Instructors across the school are informed of the move towards use in other classes. Additional faculty recruits for expansion of the project is underway. Students and staff will be surveyed as to the possibilities in the other classes outside of AP World History.

- Plan for student use of iPad in other classrooms during the school day was reviewed. Approval was secured to purchase 20 more iPads for expansion of the project.
September 14, 2010
- Students have registered and now are starting to use the wiki for posting feedback regarding their use of the apps in class. Plans were discussed about developing a page to post some of the activities they are working on.

- Mr. Bob Luddy, Chairman of the Boar of Directors, visited the classroom to see how the implementations was going. He spoke to the class regarding emerging technology and how these skills are important for success later in life.
August 25, 2010
- Students conduct in-class presentations utilizing the power point file type on Docs To Go. Some real limitations were discovered with the creating and editing of power point slides. Projecting through a data projector took some work. Using Good Reader app the VGA connector did allow for the projects to be viewed by the data projector.
August 18, 2010
- Students began use of cloud storage for documents. This was done with both Drop Box as well as Google Docs via the internet. Students used Docs To Go to edit and create various files for class.

- A sample class of 9 Students taking AP World History were chosen to pilot the iPads in the classroom.
July 19, 2010
- 10 iPads were secured and selected applications downloaded to provide the students with a basic set of tools. Discussion with the pilot teacher (Mr. Tim Hall), the principal (Mr. Dave Mahaley), and the IT director (Mr. Mike Hitchcock) was held to review the implementation plan and discuss security, network, and application issues.
